The winter of our discontent has ended, at last. Now come the spring and summer of our allergies. So, if you have cleaned out and put away the humidifier, then you are ready for the dehumidifier — and there is none that will work better for you than one of DeLonghi's several models (the basic difference, although there are others, is the size of the well/tank—one clocks in at 50 pints, another at 70 pints, and so on). The priciest is about $350 and the units go down to about $240.
For controlling allergies, it is ideal to keep room humidity at around 40% so that there is moisture in the air but you're not be overwhelmed by it. The DeLonghi digital settings allow you to program in what you need/want. There is a fan-only control with two speeds and dehumidification. The permanent, washable air filter will trap dust and that helps extend the life of the unit and is also good as an anti-sneeze device! The water tank can be emptied three ways: continuously through the company's proprietary pump system via a drainage hose; through a three-foot hose; or directly into the tank. The unit is completely portable (despite its 40 pounds, it is easy to move around by using its casters and side handles) even though it's got a large-ish footprint, so you'll want to be sure you have the space for it in your room.
A plus: It's pretty quiet, and of course, is Energy Star-qualified. You can also monitor the relative humidity and temperature with the easy-to-use LCD electronic controls. Maintenance is also fairly simple: You can easily rinse the air filter when it becomes dirty and if you feel compelled to rinse out the hose, you can do that in the tub.
Additionally, there is a 24-hour timer, two fan settings, an anti-frost device, and a tank control system with an alarm. Once you start to noodle around with the unit, you'll find the settings that are perfect for you and your comfort; the humidistat is easy to operate, so that you're always aware of what the relative humidity and temperature are. The water tank (in the front) has a transparent window, making it convenient to check the level.
