It was Kinski's idea to create the "Eve and serpent" scene, though for for all of the sensuous glamour of the final pose, it is said that Kinski spent more than two hours nude on a cold cement floor, baiting the boa. A snake wrangler had anchored it at her ankles and all waited to see what the critter would do. After many takes, the boa undulated unhurriedly across Kinski's hip, coming within inches of her ear and extended its fangs, as if in a kiss. The photo first appeared in the 1981 issue of Vogue magazine and quickly evolved into one of the best selling posters of the decade and an iconic image amongst Avedon's extensive body of work.
